Chapter Seven
The next morning Kate woke to the sound of the refrigerator door closing in the kitchen next to her makeshift bedroom. The tapping of little feet after that told her it was Joey, no doubt getting the milk for his cereal.
Frowning, she thought about what had happened the day before. Maybe Rick was right. Maybe she expected too much of her son.
She swung her heavy leg cast off the bed and sat up. âJoey?â
âYeah, Mommy?â he called.
âYou havenât poured the cereal yet, have you?â
âNo, maâam.â
âPut it away, then. Iâll scramble you an egg for breakfast.â
âYes, maâam!â
She smiled at the smile in his voice, then rose awkwardly. After indulging in as much of a stretch as she could manage with a cast on her leg and arm, she pulled the nightgown off and reached for clean underwear.
She only had three sets, which made for frequent washing, but that was better than having Alice spend more money.
Shaking her head, Kate held up the lacy red push-up bra and see-through string bikini panties that matched. She could only imagine what Aliceâs relationship with her husband had been like for her to buy such impractical, sexy lingerie. It was certainly a far cry from the six-pack cotton panties that Kate bought at Wal-Mart.
Oh, well. She had to make do with what she had.
Stifling a yawn, she donned the underwear, blessing Alice for at least buying a front-closure bra. Getting the panties over the cast always took a little time, but Kate soon had them in place.
As she was reaching for her sweater, she heard a creak in the hall.
She glanced up just as Rick hit the bottom of the stairsâ¦right outside the dining room.
âGood mornââ He stopped dead when he saw her.
Kate froze, both with shockâhe was never downstairs this earlyâand at the look on his face.
He stared at her body, clad only in the sexy, revealing, red lingerie. His gaze ate her up, as if she was a stick of cotton candy.
She should be horrified, to be so exposed. But she wasnât. The warm surprise and obvious pleasure in his face made her feel like the most beautiful creature on earth.
âKateâ¦â Her name floated on a reverent breath as he took a step toward her.
âMommy, can I make the toast?â
Joeyâs call broke the spell.
Rick gasped and drew back his hands, which had automatically reached for her. âIâm sorry. I didnât know you wereâ¦â He spun about. âDamn. Iâm sorry.â
Kate watched him bolt from the room. Galvanized from her shock, she snatched up the blue cotton sweater and dragged it over her head.
What was wrong with her, just standing there letting him look his fill? When had she become so shameless? And what did he think of her, that she wore such seductive underwear?
Then an even worse possibility occurred to her. Did this mean she and Joey now had to leave? Dear God, where would they go?
Dressed, she made her way slowly, reluctantly toward the kitchen.
When she walked in, Joey said, âFinally! You took so long, Rickâs cooking the eggs.
